Introductory Wheel Throwing Course
When: Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 pm starting
December 2, 2024 – February 5, 2025
Minimum of four people, maximum of eight people Process: Introduction to Wheel Throwing is a ten-week course that includes instruction, clay, time on the wheel, glazing, and bisque firing. The class takes place twice weekly. On Mondays, students will learn a new skill and on Wednesdays, students will have two hours of open studio time to work at their own pace. Designed to be a skill-building introductory course, students can begin their pottery journey and form a foundation for throwing on the wheel. This class will introduce the fundamentals of throwing clay on the pottery wheel including wedging, centering on the wheel, and instruction on throwing cylinders to make cups, mugs, vases, and bowls. Students will then dry and trim their own pots before firing and glazing their bisque ware.

- Email Shawn McNulty-Kowal at shawncsstudios@gmail.com with the subject line: Introduction to Wheel Throwing. Include your name, phone number, email address, and which class you would like to join.
- Shawn will then share the studio’s Venmo account information for payment.
- Pay in full one week before class via Venmo to hold your space.
- If you are unable to use Venmo, other arrangements will be made. The weekly deadline will still be in effect.
Cancellation Policy: The fee is nonrefundable if you cancel 5 days or less before your class.
Additional information:
- Please do not bring food to class. Bottled water will be provided.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that can get dirty.
- Clay and necessary tools will be provided.
- You are expected to clean up your work area and tools before leaving the studio.
Shawn McNulty-Kowal is a potter, writer, and carpenter. While living in Los Angeles, Shawn took his first wheel-throwing course at the Palos Verdes Art Center in Rancho Palos Verdes. Since then, he’s returned to the East Coast where he throws out of his home studio and Charles Street Studios. Working primarily on the kickwheel, Shawn throws vases, dishware, and sculptural pieces. Eager to learn about clay, Shawn assists with regular studio maintenance at Charles Street Studios.
Charles Street Studios, 20 Charles Street, Northvale, NJ, is a full-service ceramic arts workspace offering a range of space rental options for experienced potters. Currently, there are 10 ceramicists in the semi-private area who use wheel and hand-building techniques. Shelf rentals can accommodate as many as 20 artists in the community area. Members have use of 8 electric pottery wheels, one kick wheel, a slab roller, various hump and slump molds, a wedging table, glazing area, and 2 electric kilns that are fired to cone 6. Glazes are available, and a variety of clay bodies are offered for sale. Space is available for workshops in a variety of arts and crafts.
