Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, 2025

See quality pottery, meet the artists, watch demonstrations in Northvale, NJ.

An Artists’ Show and Sale will be offered at the Charles Street Studios, 20 Charles Street, Northvale, NJ, on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, 2025, from 11:00AM to 5:00PM. A dozen ceramicists from northern New Jersey and Rockland County, New York, will show their hand-built pieces, wheel-thrown vessels, and slip-cast pottery. Creative techniques will be demonstrated at 2:00PM each day. Admission and parking are free.

Of the 12 featured artists, three live in Northvale:

Shawn McNulty-Kowal is a potter, teacher, and writer. Inspired by the folk tradition of pottery, Shawn throws simple, functional forms on a kick wheel. He helps people develop their skills on the electric wheels at the Charles Street Studios.

Deb Reale’s interest in pottery began with a college course, then evening classes at the JCC in Washington Township. A goal for her retirement was to get back to ceramics, and has since taken hand-building classes at TASOC with Denise Kadar, Raye Cooke, and others. In the last year, Deb taught beginner potters to make whimsical fairy doors and fairy houses. The studio is one of her favorite places to be.
David Shirey has been attracted to Japanese and Korean pottery for a number of years and has always tried to pay homage to their early functional ware. He usually builds wheel-thrown pieces, but, after watching a documentary about the Japanese Living National Treasure, Hamada Shoji, he was intrigued. Now, his second favorite technique is hand building rectangular bottle shapes from slabs of soft clay, emulating Hamada’s forms. David loves the act of turning a lump of clay into a pot.
